Grand Budha at Leshan, Sichuan Province, China (71m height) is counted as the largest Buddha statue in the world. (The Buddha statue at Bamiyan, Afghanistan used to be the tallest one in the world with 114 m height. Unfortunately the Taliban regime destroyed it in 2001. At the moment UNESCO and the current regime in Afghanistan are organising a project to recover it.)
The Leshan's Grand Budha project was started in 713 AD during Tang dynasty, pioneered by Haitong, a Buddhist monk. The project took 90 years. Haitong was dead before the project was completed.
Let's hope this amazing historical site will not have the same tragedy like Bamiyan's.
